January 2007 - Interview with Dan Poynter:

Dan Poynter is the brain behind Para Publishing and so, as you can imagine, he is a very busy man. After contacting Dan about an interview, he agreed, but had to keep his answers short: “After traveling all year at the rate of 4,000 miles/week, I am finally home for a few precious days.”

So, here is the interview. Instead of pulling information from his website, you can simply read more about Dan and his company by following this link: http://parapublishing.com/sites/para/about/danpoynter.cfm

With the rising trend in self-publishing, there are a lot of independents' starting their own publishing companies to showcase their work, is this advisable?

Of course. They are able to help a lot of readers, establish their credibility and find a new profit center.

Is there more value added if you place your own publishing companies name on the book?

People want to know if this book will teach them something or solve their problem. They want to know if the author is a credible person.
No one ever asks who the publisher is.
In the US, there are 6 large publishers and 81,000 self-publishers.

Would your methods work as well as they have done for your company selling your specialized informative books versus fiction (as you have a more specific target market)?

Fiction is entertainment and has to compete with other forms of entertainment: Novels, movies and taking your kids to the zoo.
Fiction is harder to sell.

To what do you attribute your success?

Organization, and doing what I love to do.

Is there anything you would have done differently?

Maybe hire help sooner.

What advice do you offer authors and publishers to accomplish book sales and growth?

Do what you love.
Stay in one field.

We would like to extend our thanks to Dan for taking time away from relaxing to inform us about himself and his company. More information can be found by visiting his companies website: http://ParaPublishing.com.
